Classic thread.
edit: TheAbdBoy, you fail. Atomic posted basically that same exact riddle on page 13 of this thread.
Have a riddle:
What's a fraction of a pixel in size and still getting smaller, but has the fate of the human race resting upon it?
Computers.
At least, bits of computers.

Is the answer the Universe?
No.
Is it the earth?
Yes, you've practically got it, but why is it a fraction of a pixel in size and still getting smaller?
Computers.
At least, bits of computers.
No.

Universe is huge, and if you compare earth to other planets and stars out there, well, Earth is pretty much invisible. It's getting smaller and smaller because the universe is expanding.
Proof without the work:
Let v be the large-scale velocity (which means intergalactic distances, small-scale is planitary motion), field of matter in the universe. Assume v is a smooth vector field. According to the present astronomical theory, the distance between any two points is increasing and the rate of increase is proportional to the distance between the points. which means:
(v(r_2) - v(r_1)) dot (r_2 - r_1) = C |r_2 - r_1|^2
Where C is Hubble's Constant.
You can show that div v is constant and find the value of it in terms of Hubble's constant if you find the flux of v(r) out of a sphere of radius R, centered at r_1 and take the limit of R as it approaches 0.

Clever. Although I dispute the relevance of relativity to the question. The earth is a fraction of a pixel in size compared to the universe, yes, but it's not actually a fraction of a pixel in size.

On someones screen it could be.

Getting closer.

Is it a screensaver?
No. I think we've already established that the answer needs to have 'Earth' in it. And no, it's not a screensaver of the Earth.

Close, but it's not somebody and it's not a screen/monitor.

Does it have something to do with the Earth's resources?
Are people blowing it up?

Sort of, since the thing viewing Earth was made using them.
Are people blowing it up?
No.
