I think some of these would be fairly easy to make as java applets - main problem is the 'ol "my computers slow which makes it easy or hard" line.
Why not make it in something else besides java applets?
because anything other than flash would require some kind of download - which means people would have to download a new EXE for any new games (probably, unless some kind of complicated auto-update system was included). And I don't know or have flash.
for interactive games, the only options are flash, shockwave and java -nothing else has an easy web based delivery method.

Flash or shockwave are always good.

Well, when you think about it, whether it's programmed in C++ or Java, the user still must download the entire game before playing it. The advantage with C++ is that it only needs to be downloaded once, and then it should be possible to update it with smaller pieces of code. Java must be downloaded every time the game leaves the browser's cache, and any updates also require a complete redownload.

Well apart from the large amount of libraries required for C++ to produce graphics, it's not a proper web delivery method, an internet connection cannot be relied upon and there are various other shortcomings. There is a reason why all decent online games are made in flash shockwave or java. The alternative is clunky and messy.

also an application needs installing on the computer and run when they want to play the game(s), rather than accessing it from the website itself.

Touche.
Though, apparantly VB.net is supposed to be much easier with implementing online features. But, then again, I don't totally trust the authenticity of the person that told me that, so...
