You know....
MP3s are the big topic... Before Mp3s where being battled, I really have not heard of people beening taken to court for illegal programs. Programmers take as much pride in there work as much as music artists. But games and illegal gotten programs are not shared as much as MP3s have been.
But on the other hand... Some musicians really do not care if their music is downloaded for free... it gets their name out there... thus more poeple come to their concerts and venues... It is the big face-less corporations that are mad when you download a MP3 or a CD. They do not get money from concerts for the most part, they only get there money from the CD sales.
Bands like Offspring... they could care less if poeple download there music... infact they really don't care. They are not greedy like the music companys that hire them. They enjoy making there music, and know for fact, that no matter what... they are going to make money off their name as it is.
Now Bill gates... one of the richest men in the world... sure... he knows poeple will be hacking, cracking and illegaly copying his program(s). But for the most part he KNOWS that poeple will be buying the program(s) more than they are illegaly downloading them.
Game like T17 make... they know they will make a shit load of money off of there sales... but they won't be dicks about it, if someone downloads one of there programs... Do you think it will look good for the company if they sue a few poeple for containing an illegal copy of one of their games...
No matter what is made.... It will always be pirated somehow... the best a company can do is only make a better version or new CD or a better DVD of something.... you know they will make more money than any of us can only dream of either way...
If you decide to download a CD... then the companys should add something to the CD so people will want to buy the CD instead of downloading it.
I remeber when some 14 year old got sued by using Napster for downloading songs like "the Wheels on the bus".
I am happy that programmers are not getting as crazy as artists with all the law suits.
This is the year 2000 and on... welcome to the internet. Everything can be stolen now... all you can do is find a way for poeple to buy YOUR product without stealing it.
This came to mind. Look at the game Ultima Online.
They made a game... and decided to patch it...
Thus changing the game...
So what do they do... release another version of the game that can be bought.
Now these fellows make you pay 10$ US a month for a game, but that is not enough.
See you could upgrade your game without the buying the never version of the game. BUT for the new players, buying the CD made sure you didn't have to wait hours to download all the new patches for the game.
Eventualy they release a version of the game, where you could only play the "new worlds" if you bought the CD. And no amount of cracking could get you into the "new worlds".
Then after a while... they add a patch to the oringal users of the game that did not have the new version of the game... that let them into the new worlds....
But now long from this new patch... did they add a set of new ones...
That is only half of it.... but it goes on...
Me being a Vet. player of the game. I was upset of the new patches.... but since it is a popular, and alway changing game... they will always make there money from it.
Same goes for MP3s or anything else... unless something is added to the product that you cannot download.... but you like the addition features... you will tend to buy it...
For games... it is the option of new OPTIONS that will make you want to buy the product instead of downloadin it...
For music... it is the addition of new stuff, for example... some CD provide short videos clips or DVD slash addition discs....
It is all about marketing now... With the internet... it is becomming pointless to sue someone over having an illegal copy of something...
All one can do is give a markiting idea that will make sure poeple will buy there stuff rather than download it...
THANK YOU FOR READING ALL OF THAT
holy shit........

The only stuff that I download are SNES games that can't be bought anymore (and even when you can buy them, their from second-hand shops that don't give money to the companies anyway), and individual songs (since I refuse to buy a CD for one or two songs).
BTW, congratulations to Tha 411 for finding and using the 700 kb stick animation sig.
Yeah, i dont buy cds for 1 or 2 songs, i dont see the point, just download them lol as for the 700kb stick animation sig, if a mod or admin has a problem with it, they can ask me about it.
And DJ-Canada, very well said, i cant believe i read all that lol

Cool pre sig by "The 411" if he made it by himself however... you gotta slow down the animation at the end.... I got lost at what is going on near the end of that.

um... that image is a megabyte, don't you think it's a tad big?
And yeh I saw some video where a director was saying he was happy that people were sharing his movies, and that pirating movies was just like letting someone borrow a DVD... lost the link now tho... can't even remember his name, it's right there, but I just can't... heh

I watched that video, he makes a pretty good point, i mean really, whats the real difference between letting someone watch a video over at your house, then letting people download it from your computer ?

A rap video produced in 1992 in an attempt to stop piracy. Worked well, didn't it?

True story: Disney sued several day care centers because they were showing Disney movies . Reason: This violates the agreement to only use this video for personal use.
Pathetic, isn't it?

Having a radio station on in a shop or a lift counts as an unauthorised performance and can get you sued.
