What would you dream game be like? What would you do in it? What are it's main features? Share your ideas here. Here's mine:

My dream game would be an FPS of sorts. It would be single-player and is centered around a medium sized area, about the size of a small town. Most games that have a base you're either use it for saving at only or are teleported to after each mission then teleported to your next one, My mod would have a home. You drive from there to the next mission then drive back after you've finished. It's your house, well, your's and your teammates.

You and your teammates aren't Rainbow 6 or the SAS. They're freelancers, kinda. You get hired to kill people. You not offcially assocated to anyone. The game would start off with some stardard missions in which nothing much happens storyline-wise and then goes into a big storyline of which I haven't thought up yet, but they're would be a good/evil choise for each mission. For Example:

A new Mayor for the town has been elected, but politics in this town don't go down too well. The rival party want the elected party leader dead. You can either go with the rival party and kill him and recieve money from them, or you can take the job from the elected party and try to defend him.
Either way, you're not allowed to kill any innocent people because you'll A) have the police after you and B) it will attract bad publicity to your team then people won't want to hire you as often.

There would be multiple ways of going about every mission. Keeping with our example mission: If you went with killing the man, you could either set up a sniper in the opposite building or you could mingle in the crowd, then pull out a small, discreat weapon like a pistol or a throwing knife and plug him. However, there's guards. The elected party hired some other group to defend the leader of the party. But you already knew that, Didn't you? Would they just leave him unprotected because they couldn't hire your team? No.

There would also be other team much like your's. They all have strenght's and weaknessess but the game won't tell you. You have to compile and write your own notes and get pictures to make your own "User's Guide to Other Teams". You can use any source you want to find out about them, you can note your own experiences against them and use digital camera's to take pictures of them, you can watch the news on TV in your house, you can walk down to the local newsagents and buy a newspaper. You can follow them back to their house and plot on your map. And then come back at night to break in to steal their "User's Guide to Other Teams", Guns or just to hurt them.

Ah yes, the killing and hurting of other teams. Aside from normal "You get hit, you take damage", you can't really die die. Ofcourse when your health hits zero you keel over and kick the proverible bucket, it doesn't signal game over. The ingame clock fast-forwards a week, you arrive outside the hospital where your team will come to drive you home. You're told you should rest for 3 whole days (Yeah, people heal fast in this town). Just aslong as you don't get shot at all (because that will Game Over you) you're allowed to do whatever you want. You can continue to compile your notes in your Guide Book or you could drive down to the local video game shop and buy a game to play while you recover. You can still go to the mission with your team, but be the driver.

While you're doing the missions, there's a living, breathing town around you and things happen. While you're driving do to the shops to buy a newspaper, a car chase between a bank robber and a police car could be taking place. You could help one of them out. You could knock the robber's car into a tree and hope the police give you a commendation on helping them and hope they give you some money. Or you could nudge the police car into some oncoming traffic and hope the robber gives you a cut of the money. But he might not, he might try to kill you, he could give you half the money, he could give you ten pounds. If things don't go your way, you could cap his ass. But then you would have the money and the police after you. You can try to hide the money, or ditch it in the town's lake or just turn the money into the police. The police might let you off, if you don't do too much damage to their cars. They could still give you a little money because, in the end, you did kill the thief.

All the shops would work. If you was connected to the internet while your playing the game, the shops would update with new items to buy from the ingame shops with your ingame money (I hate games that charge real money for items). You could download/buy new maps for that game you bought (Along with a modem to gain access to real internet games aginst people). You could make textures for wallpaper in your house which would then be available for other people to buy.

One of mine would be where Capcom got off their lazy asses and made some new material for a new 2D fighting game. Like Capcom Fighting Evolution, except:

1. More characters. LOTS and LOTS of characters. However, ensure that no one fighter is overly strong or weak. Balance is one of the keys to a good fighting game, something developers seem to have forgotten after Street Fighter Alpha 3. And no more using 12-year old sprites like in CFE! Complete redo of the sprites and animation, make it really good-looking. Also, don't spoon feed the player from the beginning... make it so the player has to unlock a lot of the content. This always drives the player to play the game more, knowing he might have missed some spiffy goodie or unlockable character in the game.

2. Varied sounds. Most 2D fighters have rather limited sounds. At least make it so the environment affects the sound (example: in a snowy environment, the character falling down would make a soft "squish" sound in the snow rather than the typical thump). Also make it so attacking a metal opponent sounds different than attacking a human one. We like little details like that.

3. Environment. Get some environmental effects, like after falling in the snow or dirt, character gets up with some said snow or dirt on him/her. Just don't overdo it, like making snow levels extremely slippery and impossible to fight in.

4. Music. I can't stress this enough. Either take your time on making some good fighting music, or enable custom soundtracks and the ability to turn off the music. Seriously, we want to fight to some fast-paced music, NOT JAZZ.

5. Game modes. More than just Vs. and Arcade. Some variety and good modes will really lengthen the replay value.

6. Decent multiplayer. Online, tag team, all that stuff.

7. Storylines are about as important to fighting game developers as balance, and granted they aren't terribly important. But at least give the player some idea of what they're fighting for.

8. Moves. Don't give the player thousands upon thousands of complex techniques just so he can stand a chance. Street Fighter Alpha 3 was brilliant in this aspect. There were just enough to be reasonable, yet versatile and easy enough to use in any situation.

9. Controls. Custom controls are always nice, so the player isn't forced to learn some ridiculous configuration.

10. Difficulty. Give the player a good choice of how he/she wants to play the game. Give the difficulty levels some variety... 1 (opponent blocks less and is easier to defeat)- 10 (really hard to catch off guard and can counter almost any attack you try to throw).

The game should actually be FUN, so players come back for more. Minigames maybe (Tekken Bowling anybody?)?

I didn't read all of it..but sounds like a cool game. It kinda has the feel of GTA..but not really.
I'd probably buy it..if I played video games often. I like those kind of games.

(this is about psymon's post..I never seen thnikk's there)

I was going to make my dream game, rather literally. The idea occured to me a few days ago to make an hl2 mod called Lucid, based in a dream that's being controlled by evil thingies. When I can be bothered to dig propberly into the code I'll do it, but it's quite a lot of code, so I couldn't be bothered on my first go.

And now to read those posts at the start of this thread..

My dream game would be a free MMORPG that me and a friend of mine designed QUITE thoroughly.

you'd pick a race, class, job, history, and special skill from a list while making your character. all of those things would add and subtract certain stats from your character's skill sheet.

the land would be split up into 10 huge continents on which everyone lived, as well as one gigantic underworld continent below the normal 10. there would be gates between the continents set up for free use, or mages could set up a gate on their own.

when in a battle, you would have full control over everything your character does, instead of relying on premade moves and techniques.

if you're playing a melee class, you'd be able to assign various weapon strikes to keys for use while fighting, and you'd be able to move freely by rolling, jumping, hopping, ducking or any combination of any of the various movements in order to dodge, attack, and counter. you'd also be able to block in various ways in order to further your control over the battle.

if you played a mage class, you'd be able to customize your magic skills from a list of every possible magic skill in the game, instead of having to choose from "fire mage" "black mage" or anything else. the skills would be customizable to a point (you'd be able to increase range/damage/number of targets/other things at the expense of mana and/or other stats), so that you can cast a spell in the most useful way possibly for the situation. each time you would learn a spell, you'd get better or worse at casting that type of spell (your ability to cast fire, missle, and attack spells would go up upon learning a fire bolt spell, but your ability to cast ice, wall, defensive spells would go down). higher level mages would even be able to learn runic magicks in order to make complete custom spells by combining 7 runes in a way that would define all the attributes of the spell, in order to make spells all their own.

each player would be able to choose a job their character can perform, in order to provide a service to other players in exchange for money. the jobs would allow people to contruct custom-built buildings, weapons, armor, or anything else, as well as make medicinces, potions, or do other things, like cut hair or design tattoos. a person would be able to log off, and leave their character on as an NPC doing that character's job automatically until the next time the player returned to the game.

towns would also no longer be a complete safe-haven, either. if a group decided to lay seige upon a town, and the defenses for that town failed, the town would be open for attacks from anyone who wanted to attack the town.

when in a forest or any other area where monsters roam freely, the monsters would be able to see you as easily as you can see them, and would even be able to smell or sense you, depending on what type of monster it is.

there would also be a lack of indication of the level of other characters, unless in an area where it'd be required. that way if you decide to clothe yourself like a lowbie, and are really the highest level player in the game, you could have some real fun.

there's also quite a bit more that we've come up with, but this is PLENTY info

My dream game was a sci-fi FPS game, based in a authentic post-soviet russian town, where the main hero would fight mutated humans, aliens and all that stuff, while having an realistic, logical plot which *could happen* in real life. However, looks like Valve thought of the same game too, and succesfully brought the idea to life in HL2, far better than i could have imagined. They took away my sacred dream :o

I'd make a detailed desciption, but I can't be bothered. I doubt anyone would read it. Think of an "Ultimate Spider-Man" meets Tony Hawk, kind of thing, except Spider-Man doens't need a skateboard, he runs :O. Saving the world and looking even cooler. Although it would look weird if Spider-Man did a kickflip without a board. Unless if he kickflips the bad guys!

So it's Tony Hawk 2 with one of the T.H.U.G. games and the no skateboard cheat on. (Spiderman was in TH2)

Sort of, combine it with the THAW freeroam thing with badguys in New York.

I've thought of a couple of games over the past years, and some I've gone into alot of detail in.

The latest one I've thought up involves a group of bandits and a space station.

Basically, you pick a race and make your character, kinda like in PSO. Then you create your team/mob/whatever, and they're all NPC's, doing almost every command you give them, this ranges from bringing you food to life-threatening missions. Later in the game, after you've built up a team, and got yourself a little money, you then start to get more well known, and rival teams/gangs/whatever wants you out. You then have to fight back, against the teams/gangs/whatever and the police.

Races/Characters:

Large psychic dudes.
Small, pyromaniacs.
People that can faze through walls.
Human-like characters that control water.
Small, mimeish lookalikes that can make barriers and invisable walls.

I can't really put most of it into words, but hopefully that's a basic understanding of the game... I've also not thought of a more main plot, but there will be one.

A point and click pre-rendered 3d adventure game, with a playing time of 50-100 hours, with an in-depth plot, no dying, and no annoying puzzles but still challanging. Plot yet to be decided, but it's possible that I could design it...

Isn't that an oxymoron? How can a game be challenging if you can't die and you don't have any really good mind-benders?

Maybe you have to fight through a wave of bad dudes without any HP. Or do one of those Wario things for GameBoy Lame
