I return to BTP!
And with me I bring my latest creation of literature, and here goes:
Alone
Many people are driven into hysterics when they’re placed somewhere remote on their own. Many prefer having company. But for some it’s part of their job to be alone. And in such jobs it’s best to work alone.
Agent 1 crawled silently through the high grass to reach a safe place to camp. Past heavily armed troops with AK-47s and some with shotguns, he finally found a spot to rest for the night. And boy did he find a spot.
He emerged next to a vast loch, surrounded by towering mountains topped with trickles of snow. It was as if a massive meteor hit the earth and left this gigantic crater. Trees were dotted across the mountains like spots that you can’t really see. The trees swayed lethargically with the wind, and the mountains watched over the loch as if it was a mighty treasure.
It was a picturesque place, and Agent 1 felt almost at home in this part of Soviet Russia. Perhaps if the war ended he could retire and build a home here, he thought. He chuckled slightly at the thought of having the loch as a gigantic swimming pool in his backyard. But he stopped the thoughts there and returned to the mission, this is still the Soviet Union and is still the enemy. There could be snipers posted here. He needed to make sure he was safe before he could set up camp for the night.
He plucked out his binoculars from his webbing pack and observed the area. It looked clear, but you couldn’t be too sure about these things. He switched his binoculars to thermal view and looked again. Sure enough, a red shape of a body appeared around the cold, blue surroundings. He knew what he must do. There’s only one guard so it shouldn’t be a problem.
The most decorated agent in MI6 pulled out his SVD sniper rifle, taken from an enemy scout during his patrol. Agent 1 got into the prone position and took aim. The guard was at the other side of the loch, it’s quite a long shot. He judged the distance to be around half a kilometre. He found his target and steadied his aim. Since this was a long distance shot he raised the rifle up a bit to increase the trajectory. His months of sniper training taught him how to do these shots. He aimed about 2 feet above the guards head. Poor guy, the agent thought, but he’ll just go ‘night night’. The bullets were filled with a potent tranquiliser serum. One bullet in the head and off he goes to the ‘Land of Nod’. The unsuspecting guard sat lazily on a log, listening to the radio and nodding off on occasion. Agent 1 stayed rigid as he checked his aim one last time. He took a slight breath, and pulled the trigger lightly.
Click
One more click and the bullet will make its journey to a successful neutralisation. He pulled the trigger back a little more and a small bang met his ears. The bolt clicked and the gunpowder in the bullet ignited, sending the bullet out of the barrel and into a beautiful scene. It travelled over the lake at an incredible speed, then it started to lose height a bit. It gradually travelled down to the guard’s unsuspecting head. At this point the tranquiliser injected into the guard’s body and sent him into a deep sleep, dreaming of winning another bottle of vodka in a game of Russian roulette.
Smiling with accomplishment, Agent 1 stood up and trotted along the terrain to find a place to camp. He chose a spot on the edge of the loch, so he could bathe and go fishing. He dropped his bags and collapsed on the ground, ready to eat, drink and relax. He rummaged into his webbing and retrieved a C ration. He savoured the food as if it were his last, for they were. He got accustomed to the taste of the rations and started to like them. It’s an acquired taste. Not many people find them tasty, but they did provide high levels of energy, brilliant when you needed the energy for hiking.
As the sun set below the mountains he relaxed more. The clouds turned a beautiful mix of red and purple. Although he was behind enemy lines he was rather comfortable. He was intoxicated by the beauty of this place and almost drifted to sleep by its tranquillity. A place so beautiful it was like a girl he’s always loved. A place so tranquil that even a person addicted to coffee would drift to sleep.
Agent 1 prepared for sleep. He secured his entire inventory, he put out his fire and lay down with a knife at the ready if a scout happens to find him. He began to drift to sleep, but just as his eyes shut, he heard the telltale crack of twigs indicating incoming enemies. He awoke abruptly and got his things together. Once ready, he began to travel to the other side of the mountains. He stuck to grassy terrains, and stayed as far away from the loch as humanly possible.
As he reached the mountains he looked back to see where his pursuers were. It turned out that around five guards wandered here looking for a place to swim. Agent 1 grinned and began the climb to the summit. Past this mountain resided his objective, a weapon so powerful it would mean the end of the Cold War, and the temperature would begin to heat up, so to speak. He was close to his goal, and close to getting a hefty pay cheque for completing the mission. It was top-secret. Only the big guys in Number 10 know about it. But that didn’t matter. All he wanted was to get to the enemy base and enjoy completing the mission. He had to destroy the weapon. Agent 1 smiled as he reached the summit and set sight on the base. He loved blowing things up,
