I'm guessing he's used the IE-specific CSS for transparency. I'll check.

edit: yep. The DirectX filter r_e mentioned, and the alpha filter for the fadeout.

I don't know if I'd call it "hacking." Microsoft just likes to be able to do all kinds of shit in IE that's totally non-standard, and this is just one example.
