For example using a sig/avatar straight from the hard drive and bypassing all the HTML stuff. coz i tried using an avatar i uploaded but it didn't work! Then, just upload the file to BTP, making sure that it's < 40k, and that it's in .gif, .png, or .jpg format. It will give you the address to use.
