no; you do for certain individual games, but not most. at least i haven't.

wha? Have you actually looked at / do you have xbox live? You pay for the starter kit, which includes the first years subscription, and the headset in the price (would've been $50 in the US when I got it). You do have to buy the cable to connect it, but I'd imagine you do for ps2 too. The replacement headsets cost a fair amount, but the first one is free, and you shouldn't need anymore if you're careful / the only one using the service. Xbox live is "broadband only" so yes you need a good connection. Okay so I have 150k, not really broadband, but it's a cable modem so I can still use it. I don't use it much however, mainly because our connection is just a tad too slow for xbl play...
