indeed on the images. Jpeg is lossy so you end up with weird pixels around the place, but gif and png have restricted colours. What's best for what tends to become obvious... Especially with ps's save for web. heh.

IIRC, PNG is true color capable and is lossless :)

It was designed to replace both PNG and JPEG.

I think you mean GIF and JPEG, but yes I had forgotton about the true colour capabilities. It doesn't seem to get so much compression tho.

I think there's MNG too to replace animated gifs, but that's less supported...

Yes, unfortunately animated MNGs are not that well supported.
