Okay, here it goes.
I bought a new Western Digital 80 GB harddrive to put in my xbox for, erm.. nevermind that. Anyways all I need to do was put the new harddrive in my computer so i can FTP all the xbox's stock hdd data into the new one.
What I didnt know was how mother-fucking painful of a job this would be. I've spent like 3 hours trying to get it past the bios without having a stupid "DISK BOOT FAILIURE" or some other stupid error.
The main computers hard drive is on the Primary Master thing and the new hard drive is on the Primary Slave part. The little channel plug things are in the right order (master to master, slave to slave) and it just wont work.
Am I missing something?
Also, I'm trying to get the main computer running without the new harddrive tagging along but all I get is "NTLDR is missing" and I've done all I can think of. I read some tut faqs to figure out the dealy here and I think its a corrupt master boot. But me thinks the ntldr files are incorrect now since ive tryed getting this whole harddrive thing going
Uhg!~~!@1`3123k123p5juasphfdgkjdzh
so question is, what CAN i do to get rid of this "NTLDR is missing??!"!@!@#!@#
(os: win2k)
(my main job was to replace

ntldr is a system hidden file on hard drives if one was created by the computer. An older computer of mine doesnt require ntldr to boot the computer but other computers do. if you already have a harddrive that works with the computer you should put that as the master and then the other as slave and then change what you need on the extra one since you shouldnt be booting from the slave drive.

Ya i dont know whats up with the original harddrive from the main computer. I've set the little plug thing to master and the IDE cables to master but no matter what I do it just recognizes it as a salve

Anyways i cant find my win2k cd and my only option is a possible floppyboot to replace the files.. possible
maybe a crash recovery floppy thing, tho i only have about 4 working floppys

Ok, as ShootMe said the NTLDR is a hidden system file, and at my Laptop it was missing too.
So there is a way you can get it back!
But becarefull
You need to insert your Win2kCD and there
you need to enter the Setup!
In the Setupmenu select Repair, and there
choose the console.
You should now see the console, it looks like a DOS Screan.
Now you need to type fixmbr and fixboot
Both are commands to rewrite the Masterbootrecord(ntldr will be restored there too).
if you have done everything right your System should boot as usual.
After that my Laptop started as usual, and no Data got lost!
But please search the web for further infos!
I cant garant you anything!
If you dont find your Windows CD look for any other bootloaders like Grub, Lilo or anything.
Yeah i know they are for Linux but they find Windowspartitons too and can fix it but i dont know wich one will delete all the data and wich ont.

Are you using the two hard drives over one IDE cable?
If not, then try swapping the cables that the hard drives are attatched to, that'll sort the problem you have with it being seen as slave. If it's accross one IDE cable, remember that the very end connector is for the master drive and double check you have the jumpers set correctly. For my HDD I have to remove the jumper for it to be seen as slave.
What shootme and MC is correct. I just formated a hard drive and when I try to boot from it, it gives that same error. You should try and find your disk(or "aquire" one) and do what MC said.

i know, if i had the cd this thread wouldnt have existed
both hdd's are using the primary ide cable, as the secondary is used for the cd drives. I could just unhoog the 1st one as it prolly wont be used, but the problem is, is that the OS wont boot because of that gay error
hmm...
this is why i hate it when moms clean bedrooms. cant find sh*t.

Why don't you make the 80GB disk drive a slave, because it's not normally in there as master, is it? You'd want the disk you normally boot-up with to be master.

thats the problem, no matter what i do (jumper and ide cables) it just recognizes it as a slave
Anyways the xbox part of the project was a waste because I needed a hard mod-chip in order to install the dashboards/etc. onto the new hdd.
No matter, at least i have a new hdd to play with.
Now my final problem: Getting this stupid "NTLDR is missing" to go away...
And no, i dont have the win2k cd
edit: well, i do but its "lost"

Alrighty then, i found me problem.
It seems while installing the new hdd in the main computer somehow crashed the partition and deleted itself. I hooked it up to my moms computer to see what the dealy was and found numerous blank randomly named files all over with a partition of 2 gbs.
Anyways these data-recovery applications im trying are junk and greedy. All my maps (ALL 107* B&W) are on there and doing what i can to bring them back to life
...all this just to swap xbox hard-drives

If it says ntldr is missing that means you just need to get a copy of it off anouther computer. Either that or you have the wrong drive for your primary one. try switching the primary slave/secondary slave drive

your late. even if i could have gotten a ntldr file there was no way to actually get it on the computer.
incase you didnt read, the new harddrive somehow didnt like the computer itself (old vbios) and somehow deleted the old harddrives partitions and overwritten it with a new, empty 2gig one and even data recovery (bitches) proggies did not work.
Anyways im done, new hgarddrive is used for large file things (full series anime episodes, right now = Full metal alchemist 1-51 and Trigun 1-26)
The computer i had the whole problem with has busted cpu fan so I guess this was all good, if i didnt find out earlier the cpu would have melted/fired/fryed
whatever.

ABSOLUTLEY BULLSHIT
If you copy the NTDLR form an other HDD you just copy the Table of content from that HDD. This means you now have wrong Information about Cylinders and Clustors.
So your PC might think you have an even bigger HDD as it is!
The savest way to fix that problem is the FIXMBR and the FIXBOOT!
If you got no Windows CD a good old Win98 Startup Floppy-Disk might do the Job too.
