SP2 makes your computer resemble secure, software that deosnt work with it was not writtenv ery well - and possibly took advantage of lax windows security

I dont see the point in him installing it onto a games only computer (unless it's hooked up to the net) because SP2's best feature is the security (I haven't had any security issues with it and i know of few people who have)

It is hooked up to the net on a broadband connection. But this is only used for playing games over the net.

you didn't answer my question and what kind of connection you got i can imagine that would get pretty slow if it is shared!
If you want an absoulute resolve to your inital problem i suggest you format and install win updates before anything else because the problem is unusual and its more than likely spyware or some other nasty bug thats disableing you from doing it!

idiot
We have an external speedtouch broadband modem that runs at 2.2 Mb/s and is connected to the house line of which we have an eclipse broadband service.
Now heres the tricky part. There are three computers and one external modem. When one computer needs to be connected, the modem is attached via the USB hub to that computer and they are able to connect. Only one computer can be on at one time.
We have norton personal firewall too.

don't call me an idiot for not being psycic(?SP) enough to know what connection deeley set up you have. To me one computer connected at once sounds stupid you might aswell only have one hooked up to the net.

Yeh, well one computer is purely for games, another is purely NOT for games, and another is dads private computer on which he is doing a seemingly large MIDI project and so also needs the internet.
However, he will not let us get a router.

thats lunacy, routers are great - they act as a hardware firewall while allowing multiple computers to connect at once.
