Well, I wrote this for English as an extra credit project. I managed to get full credit on it. Enough on the backstory, here you go. It's a poem (deal with it).

The Unknown Hero

The Unknown Hero takes his gun in hand,
Accepts his orders,
And waits for the operation to begin.
He starts the fight, but he is not always a soldier.
Sometimes, he is a healer,
Trying to cure people of illnesses,
Or mending broken spirits.
He may be the editor for a newspaper,
A man printing out a message
Calling the people to a single cause.
Occasionally, he’s just an average Joe,
A person that can do relatively nothing
But will stand up when his beliefs are challenged.
One thing is certain though.
No matter who he is,
Or what he may do,
The Unknown Hero will fight.
He will never give up,
Will never cower in the face of danger.
He will continue fighting,
Until his ideals have been fulfilled
Or
He dies.

I wouldnt know how to go about a poem, so I dont know if ones good or not.

But one things for sure the theme is wonderful! Great imagery! It really inspires the mind etc.

I think the simplicity of that line maks you sit up to it. Youve had complexity throughout the line sof the poem and then you do have this anticlimax but its good for what it does, if you see what I mean.

Is meant to bring a sense of finality to the poem, instead of the openendedness that most poems have. Kikumbob was right, the anticlimax is the key here. The abrupt end also brings a visuilization of the hero finally subcumbing to his foes after a valiant fight.
The climax (well, the equivalent) actually comes at the lines talking about what any hero will do.

My teacher recommended I enter it in the poem competition that's going on around here. If it's approved, I'll win (something...), and the poem will be published in an anthology. I'll let you know what happens with it, even if it means reviving this thread when it's already dead...

It has my approval as well. Seemed to describe the latest american adventures: the victory of the american dream after the fall of the sovjet empire and its resulting arrogance/carelessness. Then Iraq and back with your feet on the ground, the first doubts set in.

You fail at literature. Poetry DOES NOT have to rhyme. Period. Poetry is a portal for the soul, as it were, so anything can be made into poetry. Go look at the Illiad and the Oddessey (sp?)? Those are two very long poems, that are known as Epic Poetry. Then, go find somethings from the modernist poets, such as Ezra Pound or Edgar Lee Masters. They didn't write using any particular style for the majority of their poems. Instead, they wrote Immagry Poetry, a poem where the emphesis is to make an image appear in your mind. There's many other styles as well.

Rhyming poems sound better though imo. Though, they don't have to rhyme. I like some deep non-rhyming poems tho..
