I have Age Of Empires, the first one. Its not so bad, but it is a bit down on graphics. I have played C&C Red Alert on the PS1 and that was gd. My next RTS purchase may be C&C TS for the PC, since i am a bit military-attuned

Out of the recent, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal(expansion), Warcraft III:Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne.
Warcraft II had a superb storyline and incredibly good SP campaign with lots of action, after playing it for the first time i still would pay money to buy the game and play it again even now. Warcraft III and TFT have a very exciting story aswell, the truly best RTS online play and ladder systems in existence, even though, the TFT races still need some balancing.
Out of all released RTS games, truly the best would be Starcraft IMO. The original Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War, set the standard for all RTS games to come. It was perfect in nearly every way in respect to gameplay, including perfect speed, balance, and replayability. Regarding singleplayer, the original storyline was perfectly crafted to complement an already outstanding multiplayer game, earning the game much praise for having one of the best fictional universes ever created.

The only thing about Starcraft that annoys me is when you spend and hours on one game and then you eventually lose...

That's why, in Starcraft, the initial rush is VITAL. Get to crankin' out Zealots/Zerglings/Marines ASAP and try to at least cripple your opponent really early in the game, or at least for defense if your opponent's faster. A rather cheap trick to play on the AI is to attack the enemy main structure with one of the gatherers. All the current produced enemy workers will stupidly chase after the attacker, allowing you to lead them around, while they gather absolutely no resources XD

Yeah, but then if you build all those men in the beginning, you have no defences. I try to do both at once but never end up rushing in time to get em destroyed.
