I dont usually come to BTP but as there are so many smart people here I thought i would ask.

Ive been wanting a good forum for a long time and the only one which is any good is phpBB but the thing is, i havent got a clue what to do, i dont know where to start. I dont know any php coding. Perhaps one of you could tell me how or set me up one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Go to phpbb.com and download the latest version In "downloads" section.

2. Get a good host with PHP and mySQL database support. One free one is lycos.co.uk. I'd host on my ever-up server, but I've no idea how to make a damn database on my server, and tech suppport sucks.

3. If you've gotten a host, extract the phpBB files to your comp and uplload them to a directory called phpBB2 on your comp (u can call it anything, but phpBB2 is easy to remember.)

4. Now, go to http://[your website URL]/phpBB2

It'll bring you to a simple installing page where you fill in verious info, like database login info and stuff (Lycos will give you all that, if you're using it for hosting.)


Now, the one bad thing about Lycos is the FTP is crappy, like it'll time out randomly. But you'll win. The ads are also annoying; banners that freeze teh page until they're done getting you're attention. There is a MOD (a modification to teh froum) that allows you to put the ad inn a little box at the bottom so no one ever notices it. Even if you don't know PHP, it's relatively easy to install if you just follow the instructions. I'll link you to it later on when you've got your forum installed.
