when u make a new flash document, go to insert then new symbol. Then draw the pic.

When ure done export it. The areas where u havent drawn are transparent.

That is exactly what i do. I dont set any transparency or anything. :P

Sorry, i didn't realise i did that, metal or wood will do though, thats fine.
[edit] i have just checked the post and i didn't say them both, but keep that it's great.
[edit2] To make it perfect would be a boarder around the edges on the front of it, same silver colour as the spiral.

Thats pretty much what i do, only without the symbol bit, i think transparency is an option in the export image dialog, you need to make sure it's PNG32
