Whats an overlay layer? And how do you make one?

My interpretation of the technical phrase is a layer placed over the whole image to give it another effect from what it was before.
I basically put a rectangle over the top, gave it a slight horizontal line fill and then used a 'Lighten' object property effect on it.
Of course that square didn't make the 'underneath' image look like the final image in one go. Before I added the overlay, I added a bar through the middle to support the text in a way, added highlights in a cross shape with an elongated horizontal line across and added an outer glow to that.
On all of this, each layer was usually given a 'Lighten' effect to brigthen it up...
Of course that was just a quick description, I done a few other techniques I've invented myself which will be described in the MFMX Tutorials site once I've done all I want to do on it.

is it really necessary to do add an overlay layer to every layer?
Cant you just apply one to the whole group?

In mfmx, I just put a rectangle over the whole canvas, above every other layer and do whichever effect i want.
If you're feeling picky, you can do it individually but it might interfere with teh object property effects used in prior layers.
Another sig:
Decided to make this one public since it isn't that good in png format. Download it at http://members.lycos.co.uk/popestorage/yetianother.zip then open it up with mfmx and take a look at the amount of layers.
BTW: You may notice that there are quite a few layers, this is because I change my mind alot through the whole duration of making it, so you'll often get different looking sigs from the orignial one by dragging the top layers away.
BTW2: Just tried to re-open it...may take a while for others too because of the sheer amount of layers and grouped objects. Though trust me, it will eventually load.

The downloaded zip file and extraction work fine for me. Just right click it and choose 'Extract Here...'
That sig there took about 50 minutes but that's on and off working because of msn and changing my mind through it so many times.
On average though, about 25 minutes.

Lol, I just do it the long and complicated way.
Another animation! Could be used as a banner if BTP wanted to. I call it 'Above Under'.
That is 78kb but I do have a more optimized version at: http://members.lycos.co.uk/randomimages/arrowmissbtp22.gif
That is 42kb iirc.
Hope you enjoy. I certainly did. It's so easy to work with tweens in mfmx...

Yeah, it's not bad imo.
The ripple effect is new and will be covered in mfmx tutorials too. I have to think up new animation effects to fill the site up. So i end up experimenting and testing out effects I don't actually need at the time.
Got a flame, gas explosion, waterfall, wind and electricty animation tutorials to name a few!
