I haven't posted in a while! I'm wondering if anyone knows of a piece of (preferable free) software that can record whatever sound is being played on my computer and save it to my computer without me needing to put a mic up to my headphones. Kind of like Fraps, except only for sound. Is this possible?

Thanks!

can you tell us what you are trying to capture?
if its a winamp radiostream form shoutcast you could use streamripper.

dont know what they say in other countrys but here in germany recording internet radio is marced by the laws like recording form a radio to tape...

uhm there could be another way to get your problem covered. you could use a cable that has at both ends the plug for headphones/mic so you dont have to get a mic in fornt of your boxes.

If you don't have "Wave Out Mix", you might have one called "Stereo Mix".

I suppose that's one "good" thing about my degree (aero engineering), there aren't too many terms/words/etc that have "alternative" meanings.
What, like cockpits, turboshafts, thrust, nozzles, corkscrews, ram drag, payload, flaps, and wind tunnels?

Problem 1: It's recording from my webcam. I can't seem to change that.

Problem 2: It records in 60 second bunches, which means you have to press the record button again every 60 seconds. As far as I can tell it's impossible to do this without getting gaps in whatever you're trying to record.

Conclusion: This method sucks. Use an illegal opportunistic free program from the internet instead. I happen to know of one through my *cough* sources, but it's probably not versatile enough for your needs.

What's more stupid than using the silly little voice recorder that Windows comes with, is illegally downloading one when perfectly decent ones exist for free :P

Goldwave is a nifty, free recording program.

Go to your Control Panel. Click on Sounds and Audio devices. Click on the Audio tab. Make sure your sound recording device is your soundcard, not your webcam.

Then do this:

Joe never said he wanted anything that records longer than 60 secs. Sorry, my mistake.

bs. GoldWave is also a solution.

Ok, it works now.:) But the 60 second thing is too limiting for my purposes. The program I use is perfectly legal anyway so it doesn't matter, but I just like to poke holes in things.;)

Shall check out this Goldwave thingy though.

GoldWave is made by a Canadian company. It's not exactly a *free* program but it does the job. What do you use EvilWeevil?

Audacity can record from your sound card?

*Rushes off to check*

Gosh, knowing what my sound card's actually called solves a lot of problems.

But what I'd really like is something that has a hotkey which can be activated when I'm playing games and such like.

I was going to suggets using AutoHotKey to send the record hotkey to Audacity - but I think something in the way audacity has been written has prevented it from working. I can send keys to anything else but the crossplatformness seems to break it.

unless its programmed in some sort of crazy way you should be able to simulate key presses with the windows API using SendMessage and WM_KEY surely?

I tried to find those messages in winspector spy but there didn't seem to be any :s (would imagine that's how autohotkey does it as well)
